WRMS Electronic Device Policy

WRMS Electronic Device Policy

We discourage students from bringing any highly valuable items to campus that could be damaged or stolen - including, but not limited to, cell phones, or other electronic devices, such as Airpods and smartwatches, personal laptops. Any student who fails to abide by the district Appropriate Use Policy or school rule will be subject to progressive disciplinary guidelines. Cell phones or other electronic devices are permitted on campus, as long as the following expectations are met:

DURING CLASS TIME

  • Devices are not allowed during break or during lunch. They must be turned off and  in your backpack from the beginning to the end of school and in a student’s backpack unless permission is given by a teacher. This includes smartwatches.
  •  In the case when a teacher gives a student permission to turn on their device, the students will be given specific instructions as to the purpose of the activity and the proper use of the device.  It is the student’s responsibility to turn their electronic devices off.
  • Students are to use the office phone in an emergency, to notify parents/caretakers of an illness, and to notify parents/caretakers of a schedule change of a school sponsored event. They are not to use their cell phones.
  • Devices may not be used for any reason in the locker rooms or bathrooms.
  • Devices should not be used for recording or photographing themselves, other students and staff members, especially without permission or consent.
  • By allowing your child to bring their electronic devices to school, you are agreeing that they can be stored in the office if they are inappropriately used. We are not responsible for any damage.

If a student violates the cell phone/electronics expectations, the device will be confiscated.

  • If a device is confiscated during class time, the teacher or staff member will deliver it to the office.

1st time office confiscation:  The student will receive a written warning with a copy of this policy to take home and review with his or her family.  The student will pick up the device from the main office at the end of the school day.
2nd time office confiscation:  The front office will notify the parent by email that the student had their device confiscated for the 2nd time. The student will pick up the device from the main office at the end of the school day.
3rd time confiscation: The office will email  the student’s  parents or caregivers of the infraction. Parents/caregivers will be told to pick up the device from the main office at the end of the school day.  The student will receive a trash pick up assignment during their lunch
4+ times confiscation:  Admin will call the parent to inform them the student had their electronic device confiscated for the 4th time.   The device will be held in the main office until a parent or guardian can pick it up after the end of the school day.  The student will be issued a lunch detention. The student must check in their phone for the remainder of the quarter, at the beginning of each school day. They can pick it up at the end of the day.

If a student refuses to give up their technology, they will automatically be asked to check it in every day for the rest of the quarter or parents will make sure the technology is not brought to school.
